Abstract
The 16th century was a pivotal era in the evolution of the English language, marked by significant phonological, grammatical, and lexical transformations. This article explores the profound impact of the period, focusing on three major aspects: the Great Vowel Shift, which altered vowel pronunciation and contributed to the transition from Middle to Early Modern English; the standardization of English grammar and spelling, driven by the advent of printing and the rise of literacy; and the enrichment of vocabulary through extensive borrowing from Latin, Greek, and other sources. Additionally, the era's literary achievements, notably those of William Shakespeare, played a crucial role in expanding and refining English usage. By examining these developments, the article highlights how the 16th century laid the foundational framework for modern English and significantly shaped its linguistic trajectory.
