Abstract

A pronunciation dictionary, or lexicon, is a specialized reference tool that records the correct pronunciation of words through phonetic transcriptions, typically using systems like the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) or ARPAbet. These dictionaries are instrumental in various fields, including linguistics, language education, and speech technology, serving to standardize pronunciation and bridge the gap between written and spoken language.Typically, each entry in a pronunciation dictionary includes the word's phonetic transcription, syllable breaks, stress patterns, and sometimes dialectal variations. Such dictionaries are essential for applications like automatic speech recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech (TTS) systems, providing standardized pronunciation patterns that enhance the accuracy of these technologies. However, creating pronunciation dictionaries involves challenges, such as accounting for regional accents, language evolution, and homographs—words with identical spellings but different pronunciations based on context.
